Penn Lines lauded for excellence
in cooperative communications

During the 60th annual meeting of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) held March 10-13 in Dallas, Texas, Penn Lines was named winner of the 2001 George W. Haggard Memorial Journalism Award. The prestigious honor recognizes the electric cooperative statewide publication that "best demonstrates forthrightness and courage in support of national objectives of the rural electrification program, particularly those of a controversial nature; raises the standards and professional excellence of statewide publications; and promotes and strengthens local cooperative member education."

"Earning national recognition like this helps confirm that Penn Lines is effectively fulfilling one of its primary purposes - educating electric cooperative consumers on the value and importance of cooperative membership," notes Perry Stambaugh, Penn Lines editor.

The award -- determined in part by a panel of independent judges -- is named for George W. Haggard, former general manager of Texas Electric Cooperatives, Inc. and a statewide electric cooperative publication editor, who was killed in an airplane crash in 1951.

NRECA is the service arm of the nation's 900-plus electric cooperatives. The nation's 32 electric cooperative statewide publications reach nearly 8 million households each month.
